Balance between club and country gets tricky with World Cup
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? Kendall Waston was surrounded by Vancouver Whitecaps teammates when the club’s coach, Carl Robinson, informed him he had made Costa Rica’s 23-man World Cup roster for the first time. The applause, warm wishes and water-bottle shower that followed were a sign of respect and admiration. Waston is Vancouver’s captain, and […]

Capitals flying high, up 2-1 on Vegas in Stanley Cup Final
WASHINGTON ? Alex Ovechkin went airborne, Evgeny Kuznetsov flapped his arms like a bird of prey and the Washington Capitals are flying high, just two wins away from winning the Stanley Cup.
Ovechkin dived to score his 14th goal of the playoffs and raised his arms in joy when Kuznetsov beat Marc-Andre Fleury and broke out his signature bird celebration in a second period the two Russians will long remember. Led by their two best players, the Capitals beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-1 Saturday night to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final.
Fired up in the first Cup Final game in Washington since 1998, the Capitals unloaded chance after chance on Fleury, who made 23 saves but couldn?t backstop a frazzled, disjointed team that lost two games in a row for the first time in the playoffs. At the other end, Braden Holtby gifted Tomas Nosek a goal by giving the puck away but stopped the other 21 shots he faced f ...

Jutanugarn shoots 67, takes lead at US Women?s Open
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Ariya Jutanugarn used two quick birdies at the U.S. Women?s Open to put the pressure on leader Sarah Jane Smith.
With the momentum secured, the 22-year-old from Thailand was far from finished.
Jutanugarn shot a 5-under 67 in the third round Saturday, turning a three-shot deficit into a four-shot lead and creating an excellent opportunity to win her second major championship. Even Smith, who shot a 74 to fall back to second place, was impressed by Jutanugarn?s relentless surge.
?She?s a spectacular player, obviously,? Smith said. ?Her length is just one part of her game. She hits it a long way, but her short game is impeccable. She rolls the ball beautifully.
?She?s just the whole package.?
Jutanugarn certainly looked like it on Saturday, combining long drives with a solid short game and putting. She made six birdies and just one bogey, rarely encountering serious trouble. When asked if her game had any ...

Nadal powers into 4th round with French Open streaks intact
PARIS ? Right from the get-go in Court Philippe Chatrier, things were not looking good for Rafael Nadal?s latest French Open foil: The 10-time champion at Roland Garros won the first 12 points against Richard Gasquet.
?I started badly,? Gasquet would say later.
Well, that?s one possible explanation. Another is much simpler. To wit: He was facing the mighty Nadal ? winner of all 16 matches this pair has played against each other as professionals ? and on red clay, to boot. Nadal eventually lost points, of course, but never really relented in a meaningful way en route to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 third-round victory that was only his latest declaration of dominance on this surface and at this Grand Slam tournament.
?Once he?s ahead,? Gasquet lamented, ?it becomes impossible.?
Consider the streaks that the No. 1-ranked Nadal has amassed.
He has won 12 consecutive matches at Roland Garros; the last loss was against Novak Djokov ...

DeChambeau takes 1-shot lead as Woods lurks at Memorial
DUBLIN, Ohio ? The cheers kept coming across Muirfield Village, even after Tiger Woods was done making another run up the leaderboard at the Memorial.
Patrick Cantlay made two eagles, including a hole-in-one.
Joaquin Niemann, the 19-year-old from Chile, took the lead with a 50-foot eagle putt and fell out of the lead when his bid for another eagle attempt landed in a tiny corner of a meandering creek.
Bryson DeChambeau ended an action-packed Saturday by making one of only six birdies on the par-3 16th hole, saving par with a tough flop shot from behind the 17th green and finishing off a 6-under 66 with a 9-iron into 5 feet.
That gave him a one-shot lead going into the final round, which features Woods in the mix at Muirfield Village for the first time in six years.
?Look, I just want to birdie every hole,? DeChambeau said. ?That?s all we?re trying to out there.?
The course is so soft and vulnerable, it seems as thou ...
